What is RTE ACT?
RTE refers to right to free Education. This Act appears in
the article 21 A of the Indian constitution. Right to free education propagates
free and compulsory education for all children from the age group of 6 years to
age group of 14 years. RTE act came into force in 2009. In order to ensure
qualitative education to all children irrespective of their age, sex, caste,
creed and social status, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) laid down
basic guidelines for individuals who wish to become teachers for classes first
to eight. These guidelines were then formulated into an eligibility test known
as Teacher eligibility test(TET). In order for any individual to be eligible
for teaching in Government schools, he or she has to clear the teacher’s
eligibility test (TET Exam).
Why was TET Introduced?
Teachers eligibility Test was primarily introduced with an
idea of setting a standard for employing teachers and educational assistants in
schools. TET also ensured that all students receive the same level of education,
as they will be handled by individuals who hold basic qualifications as per
norms laid by government of India. TET would also motivate the educational
institutions for teachers to improve the quality of education imparted to these
prospective teachers. It would also ensure the stakeholders about Government's
initiative and emphasis towards stabilizing and enhancing the quality of
education for prospective teachers and students.
